Alex
Shafran Alex, 16, began playing the saxophone 6 years ago and plays both alto and soprano sax. As destiny would have it, Alex met band director Dave Adams one lucky day in Virginia Beach and joined the Young Razzcals for the Telluride Jazz festival in 2002. It was there that he met his idol and legendary jazz saxophonist, Richie Cole. Alex has recorded three CDs, one of them with Richie Cole. Alex and Richie have played together at Blues Alley, Telluride 2004, and several other private fundraisers. When contacted by a newspaper columnist, Richie said, “When I first heard Alex play, I saw myself 40 years ago. The kid is wonderful. He’s got a lot of talent and a great future ahead of him.” After his first appearance with the Razzcals in Telluride 2002, they have played at the Telluride Jazz festival in 2004, and will return in August of 2006. Because Alex attends a small school that does not offer band, he delights in every opportunity to play with the Young Razzcals. He has also had the privilege of playing with Larry Coryell as well as band members of Spyro Gyra and Santana. |
